Consumption and Treatment Services (formerly called supervised consumption services) provide a safe and clean environment for people to use their own drugs under the care of trained staff. In Ontario, Consumption and Treatment Services must be integrated and offered alongside other health care services and supports including, first aid, client education, sharps disposal, access to sterile needles and other supplies, access to naloxone (medication to temporarily reverse an opioid overdose); and referral to other services.
Currently, Region of Waterloo Public Health and Emergency Services is undertaking a feasibility study to explore the need for Consumption and Treatment Services in Waterloo Region.
