Safer drug use or harm reduction refer to policies, programs and practices that aim to reduce the harms associated with the use of drugs. This can include but does not require stopping drug use. Harm reduction benefits people who use drugs, their families, and the community.
Harm reduction is an approach to substance use that is stems from a justice and human rights orientation. The goal of harm reduction is to take a person-centered approach that sees individuals who use drugs identify what positive changes means for their own lives; and then helps them work to achieve that change without judgement, coercion, discrimination, or requiring sobriety as a precondition of support. (Harm Reduction International, 2024).
An important part of safer drug use is providing information about drugs and how to minimize the risk associated with using drugs from a factual instead of fear based lens.
